Bush's Legal Legacy
Rumsfeild avoiding Germany...
More on Gonzales... and another article on Gonzales...
What will the legacy of Bush's regime be? How will history record this period? I believe and this is extrapolation and conjecture, that 30-40 years from now, the young children who are born from 1990-2015 will have to reinvent a lot of wheels. Political wheels, wheels that represent battles fought for civil rights, rights of religious freedom, women's equality, unions, worker's rights etc. A lot of progressive ideals, progressive legislation now taken for granted will be almost completely taken away from us as a nation...or we will lose so much ground that it will be like campaigning for what was " substantially" won in the 1880's through 1990's all over again...I am not saying we are there yet, and I have sincere hopes that progressives, liberals, independents, greens, democrats, libertarians, moderates of all stripes and colors will somehow in each of their unique ways, keep a good portion of the American " dream" alive for a majority of Americans.
However, I think it is under attack in so many ways. One of which is shown above...the rule of law. I also think that the best American treats everyone-- from POW to prisoners in their own country, as " Americans" should be treated. Fair treatment. I am not advocating " spoiling" people in prison, giving them a deluxe hotel room with bars...I am advocating decent meals, shelter from weather, decent sleeping conditions, ability to exercise and get an appropriate daily exposure to the outside air, decent medical treatment and basic rights to basic needs. Nothing fancy, nothing special. Sure, watch them like a hawk, and make a POW camp even more secure than the most high security prison, but do not use torture. This is a bad slippery slope which I think, echoes throughout the society. I can only hope and pray, and work in my own way, that this attitude that torture is okay, will not stand for long in this country. It cannot. It is wrong, deeply and morally, ethically and wrong for this country to go down this path.
